The Pan-Orthodox Council of 2016 - a New Era for the Orthodox Church?
Interdisciplinary Perspectives
The Orthodox Church plans to convene a “Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church” close to the Pentecost Feast in 2016. This “Pan-Orthodox Council” is meant to be an attempt to address and possibly solve problems within the Orthodox world which have appeared since the 19th century, ranging from the relations between the different autocephalous (independent) Orthodox Churches and the organisation of church life outside of the traditional territories of these Churches to moral and ethical issues related to the globalised modern world. This conference focuses not only on the council as a theological event, but will also approach it and the issues it will address from a variety of perspectives, including (geo)political, historical and sociological ones. Moreover, representatives from a variety of geographical, scholarly and ecclesiastical standpoints have been invited, not primarily to present “their” own church’s view, but rather to highlight different perspectives on the intriguing questions pertaining to the Pan-Orthodox Council.
Co-operation partner: University of Erfurt, Chair in Orthodox Christianity. With kind support of "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft" and "Renovabis". For further information on the conference, please, see also the conference's website here.
