The Visual Language of Patriotism: Right-Wing/Patriotic Fashion in Eastern-Central Europe (Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Hungary)

The Ukrainian "Vyshyvanka" appeared at Fashion Week in Paris. Combat trousers and T-shirts with "cursed soldiers" together with folk motives on dresses and skirts are now popular in Poland. During their yearly patriotic assemblies, Hungarian right-wing activists wear Mongolian inspired attire. Kazakh female pop singers dress themselves up as nomadic amazons and Russian girls wear blouses with portraits of Putin. How can one talk about the current development of neo-nationalist/regionalist patriotic fashion in Eastern Central Europe? This lecture wants to shed light on the fascinating phenomenon of a broad revival of patriotic attire which now gathers momentum in many parts of Eastern Central Europe and Eurasia. It will focus comparatively on the cultural and political dynamics of the perception of patriotic clothing in these regions.
Die Veranstaltung findet im Rahmen der Vortragsreihe "Revolutions and Their Impact on Modern Eastern and Central Europe" statt, die vom „Forschungsverbund transregionale Osteuropaforschung – Prisma Ukraine" ausgerichtet wird. Zu diesem Verbund gehören Universitäten und Forschungseinrichtungen in Berlin und Brandenburg, die sich mit Osteuropa und der Ukraine beschäftigen. Der Verbund ist am Forum Transregionale Studien angesiedelt und baut auf der Arbeit der Berlin-Brandenburg Initiative (BBUI) auf, deren Partner die DGO ist. Er organisiert Veranstaltungen und lädt Wissenschaftler aus Osteuropa und anderen Regionen nach Berlin ein. Ziel ist es, zu einem besseren Verständnis der Entwicklungen in der Ukraine und ihrer Nachbarländer beizutragen.
