LGBTIQ*activism in (il)liberal and transforming states

1. Oktober 2022, 16:00 Uhr

f3 freiraum für fotografie, Waldemarstraße 17, 10179 Berlin

Opposition to LGBTIQ* rights is becoming a key part of illiberal governments all over the world. While in Poland the PiS government attacked the LGBTIQ* community for example by supporting so called “LGBT ideology-free zones” (Strefy wolne od ideologii LGBT) Hungary’s Viktor Orban is building a self-proclaimed illiberal democracy along the lines of traditional values, anti-feminism, heterosexuality and generally LGBTIQ* hostility. However, this backslash provoked powerful and vivid opposition and activism against this backslash.

In this Panel discussion we want to focus on the current situation of the LGBTIQ* communities in Hungary and Poland. We discuss the current situation for activist in these countries and how it is possible to oppose the illiberal backslash. Furthermore, we want to take a look on the situation in Ukraine after the full scale war of Russia against the country. What does the war mean for LGBTIQ* plus people and activist?
