The Right to Memory. Film and discussion with film director Ludmila Gordon

Memorial – probably the best-known NGO in Russia dedicated to studying the country’s past and defending human rights – faces severe trouble: The Prosecutor General’s office of the Russian Federation demands the dissolution of Memorial on grounds of alleged violations of the “Foreign Agents Law”. The trial against Memorial, which was opened on November 25th 2021 shows a new level of repressions by the Russian state against civil society.

The current situation in mind, the Munich local group of the Young German Association of Eastern European Studies (Junge Deutsche Gesellschaft für Osteuropakunde) in cooperation with the chairs of Eastern and Southeast European History and Russia-Asia-Studies at LMU Munich organizes the screening of Ludmila Gordon’s documentary “ПРАВО НА ПАМЯТЬ” (The Right to Memory, 2018) portraying Memorial’s founder Arseny Roginsky (1946-2017) and a discussion with the film director. In the documentary, Roginsky openly addresses issue of memory culture in Russia as well as his personal experiences during Soviet rule.

The discussion will take place on Wednesday, December 8th from 5:30 p.m. (Central European Time). We kindly ask all participants to watch the movie beforehand. It can be accessed online in various language versions: https://therighttomemoryfilm.com/
